The bad news is that losing belly fat takes time and needs a lot of patience. Losing belly fat is sometimes more difficult than just losing weight, especially if the belly fat has been there for a number of years. What is important to know, before getting into the actual ways on how to lose belly fat, is that you need to be patient and not get disappointed. Some of the methods that worked for other people may not work for you. You need to take your time and try what is best for your situation.
So what kind of things can you do to lose belly fat, and get your life back?
You are probably very aware of all the different products available on the market. Some unscrupulous marketers will try to make their products sound like miracle cures. Remember: there is NO one drug that will make you lose a miraculous amount of weight quickly and safely. If there were, everyone would be using it!
That said there are many options open to you.
First is dietary modification.
Do you really know what is in the food you eat? Keep a food diary and add up the calories, sugar, and fat you eat on a daily basis. Are there areas you could improve?
At the same time, keep an exercise diary. Are you doing 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week? Could you walk to the store instead of drive? Could you cycle to work?
Finding little lifestyle changes that you can incorporate easily into your daily routine is the best way to lose weight permanently in the long term.
Another option is to use drugs.
These can act in two main ways: as appetite depressants or as inhibitors of fat digestion. Meridia is probably the most well know example of an appetite depressant and Xenical is the only FDA approved example of a drug to alter the way the body digests fat.
Other FDA approved prescription drugs for short-term treatment of obesity include Bontril, Tenuate, Didrex, and Lonamin.
You need to discuss your specific circumstances with your healthcare provider before starting on any of these drugs. They can have serious side effects and are certainly not suited to everyone.
If you have tried all of these approaches and are still overweight then another, more drastic option is of course surgery. From gastric balloons to gastric bands, there are several procedures available as a last resort consideration. These procedures are not without considerable risk. They should only really be considered by patients who are at life threatening levels of obesity, in whom not having the surgery carries more risk than the surgery itself.
If you are strict with yourself then a combination of some of the treatment choices above should help you to lose weight. Remember there is no miracle cure. It is not going to be easy and will take a lot of dedication but the result is worth it. You will be happier in your own skin and will be around for longer to enjoy life to the full.
