A personal story on how I lost 10 kilos in one year

Updated on October 9, 2009

People who are seriously interested in losing weight agree on one of the most important basic principles of weight loss: Weight loss cannot be done using chemical or deprivation diets and burning your self endless hour in the gym. Proper weight loss has to be done healthy and naturally. This means that you should lose weight using techniques which add value to your health and they do not create any others. By losing weight naturally it means that the amount of weight you will lose will not be too much too quickly and that after the weight loss you will acquire a normal weight ideal for your body type, age and sex. The obvious question that many people are looking to find out the answer is how? How can someone lose weight fast, healthy and naturally? The answer is simpler than you might think. Natural weight loss can be achieved by following healthy guidelines and techniques for losing weight. These techniques have nothing to do with the diets that you have seen so far or the miraculous weight loss programs that promise rapid results in minimum time. I will give you an idea of how to lose weight naturally by describing my own personal experience with weight loss.

When I started losing weight my goals were clear. I wanted to lose 10 kilos and reach a weight of 75kg. According to my height, age and Body Mass Index (BMI) this was the ideal weight for me. I made the assumption that I could lose 1 kilo per week so I assumed that this process would take me 10 weeks. Wrong assumption. I was never able to lose 1 kilo per week but I finally managed to meet my targets. It took me almost one year. This experience was very good for me because not only I have lost the extra weight but it helped me to learn how to correctly approach weight loss.

First and most important of all I did not follow any miracle diet. I never believed and I still do not believe that these fast ways of losing weight are effective, natural and healthy. To my opinion they are all scam. They are still available on the market today due to 2 reasons. First because they have powerful marketing teams that are promoting them and second because people are eager to lose weight fast and they are looking for the easiest way to achieve it and so they fall into the traps of these scam diets or products. I did my weight loss the traditional and healthy way.

At the beginning I was very disappointed because the good results were not coming. The first 2 weeks I lost 1/2 a kilo and then for almost 1 month nothing. I did not give up. I had the persistence necessary to continue. After the first month passed with no good results I took a break and analyzed the situation. I tried to find out what I was doing wrong and fortunately I found the ways and courage to continue for better results. This is a key point in the whole weight loss process. Do not give up. Weight loss may take time. During that time you have to track your results and take corrective actions were possible.

The next months were better. I have created my plan and I started losing between 1 and 2 kilos per month. Each time I used the scale to see my progress I got more courage to continue for even better results. After the first 6 months things became easier. I got used to my new lifestyle and was much easier for me to meet my targets. I was happy and full of confidence. Now after almost 2 years I am still on my normal weight and never got the extra kilos back.

My own experience gave me a lot of things. If you want to lose weight you have to do it step by step. Do not concentrate your efforts on numbers only, concentrate your efforts on how to change your eating habits to eat less without understanding it, try to get used to the manner of eating low fat foods or foods that are low in calorie. Introduce healthy meals to your daily diet and prefer fruits and vegetables. Convince your self that you do not have to drink a soft drink with every meal; water is even better and has 0 calories. Give your self the pleasure of eating a variety of food types and do not exclude any type from your diet. Be selective and replace the foods and drinks with alternatives that are low in calories. Make sure that you do not make your self bored. If you do that you will get de-motivated and quit. Remind your self constantly about your targets. Do not be passive. Be active and make sure that everything you eat and drink will assist your efforts and not destroy them. Visualize how you would look like self after losing the weight. Think how great you will feel and patiently wait for that day to come.

There cannot be real weight loss if you do not exercise or perform some form of physical activity. I used to be one of those people that go home from work and sit on the couch watching TV, eating delivery food watching TV and sleeping watching TV. This was my lifestyle before and this is what gave me the extra 10 kilos. Once I started the effort to lose weight I changed these habits. To do that I had to ask the help of my friends who encouraged me to stand up and exercise. At first I played basketball for 30 minutes 2 times per week. After a few months I joined a gym and did some weight training for 45 minutes 3 times per week. This combination of sports and exercise not only it helped me weight loss but most important of all it has changed my life. I found the missing energy and I know feel better than ever. Exercise makes you stronger both physically and mentally. It is amazing how different is my life now that I have achieved my weight loss goals.

It’s never too late to start your efforts to lose weight. Start now, make changes to your life style and habits and be patient, the good results are around the corner.
